Welcome to the City of Casey Youth Counselling Team!

Who are we?

We offer a free counselling service to the residents of Casey or anyone who has a meaningful connection to the municipality between 10 – 25 years of age, be it through work, sporting groups or recreation. The goal of our service is to assist you with identifying and addressing emotional issues you may be struggling with, and to provide a safe, confidential space for you explore these issues.

What do we do?

Our service features 3 unique support streams, each of which are designed to meet the diverse needs of our community:

  • Individual counselling: for young people 13-25 years old who live, work, study or have a significant connection to Casey.
  • Parent assisted therapy: for children 10-12 years old, where parents will be actively involved in the counselling process and implementing strategies at home.
  • Support for parents or carers of 10-25 year olds: up to 3 sessions of support with the aim of providing mental health information, communication strategies with t(w)eens and refining existing parenting skills.

    Mental Health Week 2019 runs from Saturday 5th of October through to Friday 11th of October. World Mental Health Day is recognised internationally and marked every year on the 10th October.

    Each day of Mental Health Week 2019 we will post information on a new topic related to improving mental health and wellbeing with tips, strategies and resources.

  • Tackling the Stigma of Mental Illness

    Let’s start with a difficult, but important issue to kick things off for Mental Health Week 2019 - stigma.

    Stigma is when someone sees you in a negative way because of a particular characteristic or attribute such as skin colour, cultural background, a disability or mental illness.

    Stigma also occurs when a person defines someone by their illness rather than who they are as an individual. For example, when someone is labelled as ‘depressed’ rather than as ‘a person experiencing depression’.

    For people with mental ill-health, the social stigma and discrimination they experience can make their problems worse, making it harder to recover. It may cause the person to avoid getting the help they need because of the fear of being stigmatised.
